The Senior Project Engineer holds a pivotal role in providing leadership and technical guidance to a cross-functional engineering team, ensuring the successful execution of major programs. This position oversees diverse projects, including those demanding non-recurring engineering support for existing designs and new product development, from program initiation through the entire product life cycle, encompassing TRL1 to TRL9 stages. The role of the project engineer extends to all technical aspects of programs, involving the management and coordination of the technical team, design and development, design reviews, scheduling, budgeting, staffing, baseline control, risk management, technical customer interactions, milestone management, failure investigations, and issue resolution.
Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated experience in leading a project engineering team or multi-disciplined engineering team.
- Proficiency in developing project plans, schedules, and budgets.
- Track record of managing programs, including cost accounting through Earned Value analysis, reporting cost and schedule metrics, and creating variance reports.
- Competence in Risk Management.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to quickly grasp and apply new technical information and evaluate its implications.
- Effective communication skills for technical discussions.
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to drive tasks to completion.
- Understanding of the product lifecycle development process.
- Self-sufficiency and the ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Adaptability to work under deadlines to ensure customer requirements are met.
- Possession of a Project Management Certification (e.g., PMP) is desired.
- Eligibility for a top-secret or secret security clearance is advantageous.
- A Bachelor's degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering (a Master's degree is preferred).
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in project engineering, product development, or design engineering.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in leading cross-functional teams or projects.
About Key Responsibilities:
- Strategize engineering programs and assemble the engineering project team to align with contract specifications.
- Develop a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and a schedule featuring phase gates that correspond to contractual technical requirements.
- Ensure that contract requirements are reflected in engineering deliverables.
- Define the necessary engineering resources and ensure adequate support.
- Ensure alignment and coordination of activities among all assigned personnel and other project participants.
- Oversee day-to-day engineering activities to achieve on-time and on-budget execution.
- Coordinate activities within the engineering team and collaborate with internal and external groups to resolve technical issues.
- Lead and organize all internal and customer technical meetings (CEB, PDR, CDR, etc.).
- Monitor project performance metrics and provide regular updates on project status.
- Implement the Earned Value Management (EVM) process for engineering activities.
- Review changes in technical requirements and manage all out-of-scope requests.
- Control project costs by reviewing expenditures, monitoring and approving quotes.
