As an IT Database Specialist, you will report to the team’s Coordinator and play a crucial role in supporting the database environments that underpin essential citizen services, including water supply, fire and paramedic response, transit, and traffic signals.

Job Requirements:

  • Possess a University Degree in Computer Science or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Demonstrate a minimum of 3 years of experience in deploying, maintaining, and administering at a systems level, at least one of the database products utilized by the City within large-scale business systems.
  • Experience in supporting other infrastructure systems (on-premise or cloud) would be advantageous.
  • Ability to analyze system problems and carry out corrective actions.
  • Knowledge of the ITIL framework and experience with ITIL services (certification preferred) would be an asset.
  • Exceptional written communication skills.
  • Strong verbal communication skills, enabling effective interaction with all levels of the organization and external stakeholders.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, fostering effective and positive working relationships with teams, partnerships, and alliances.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and circumstances, including the ability to work on diverse projects simultaneously.

About Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the daily operation of databases and promptly address server performance or resourcing issues.
  • Ensure that database backups are completed as scheduled and are comprehensive.
  • Guarantee the achievement of recovery time objectives (RTO) and recovery point objectives (RPO) when database recovery is necessary.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to ensure that data classification standards are met for databases and that database instances are correctly located within the network security zone.
  • Provide schema-level database support to customers and database administrators (DBAs) by updating server and infrastructure-level database configurations as required.
  • Verify the proper functioning of database monitoring tools and promptly address any detected failures.
  • Deploy database software and create new database instances, both in the cloud and on-premise.
  • Decommission unnecessary database servers and instances.
  • Plan migrations and upgrades for database instances in coordination with business stakeholders, DBAs, and application support staff.
  • Troubleshoot technical and performance issues with databases in collaboration with customers, DBAs, and technical staff.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of the database environment and associated processes.
  • Prioritize and resolve incidents reported by customers and support groups.
  • Collaborate with other technical support teams, developers, and business stakeholders to deliver effective business solutions.
  • Participate in the development and promotion of IT policies and processes in coordination with technical support groups.
  • Support various technical environments essential for delivering business solutions.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to resolve issues for staff or customers.
  • Apply technical expertise and knowledge to devise innovative solutions to address business requirements.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) to advise larger projects on best practices and technical options.
  • Work with consultants and vendors during system implementation and troubleshooting activities.
  • Alert the supervisor of any threats to service delivery.
  • Coach and mentor junior team members.
  • Stay updated with the latest IT knowledge by attending relevant courses and seminars, as well as exploring new tools and technologies.
  • Research software products, new tools, and techniques, and prepare recommendations.
  • Actively recommend training and explore new technologies that could benefit the City.
  • Develop expertise in the City's information systems, business processes, and challenges to provide relevant advice and recommendations.
