Reporting to the Manager of Operations, the Construction Inspector plays a crucial role in overseeing various capital works projects and maintenance programs, ensuring their successful completion.
Job Requirements:
- Possession of a three-year diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent education and experience, as deemed satisfactory by the Director of Public Works.
- Accreditation as a Certified Civil Engineering Technologist with the Ontario Association of Certified Technicians and Technologists, along with a minimum of one consecutive year of experience in municipal services design and construction.
- Prior experience in the administration of construction contracts and contract documents.
- Strong written and oral communication skills, problem-solving capabilities, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with limited supervision.
- Knowledge of road and drainage design principles, construction practices, Ontario Provincial Standard Specifications (OPSS), construction materials, and construction safety legislation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel.
- Reliable personal transportation is essential.
- Must have the legal authorization to work in Canada.
About Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the Manager of Operations and Construction Coordinator in managing municipal maintenance and capital contracts.
- Conduct inspections on work carried out by contractors and consultants for a range of projects, including high float paving, roadside protection, catch basin and storm sewer repairs, road repairs, sidewalk replacements, park upgrades, playground replacements, sports field improvements, court upgrades, and stormwater management maintenance.
- Ensure strict adherence to Municipal contracts, standard specifications, engineering drawings, provincial standards, and construction safety regulations.
- Perform basic engineering and maintenance investigations on existing infrastructure elements related to grading, culverts, curbs, driveway tie-ins, fencing, guiderails, sidewalks, stormwater management ponds, catch basins, and manholes.
- Demonstrate proficiency in interpreting contract documents.
- Review engineering submissions and development proposals, providing written recommendations and expertise to ensure compliance with general maintenance principles.
- Attend design and construction meetings, offering guidance to contractors, consultants, agencies, and authorities on construction or maintenance issues.
- Mediate and negotiate resolutions when conflicts arise, ensuring that appropriate decisions are made on behalf of the Municipality.
- Interact with the general public in a professional and courteous manner.
- Prepare cost estimates and provide recommendations related to municipal capital and maintenance projects.
- Conduct research and assist in the preparation of reports and correspondence.
- Maintain accurate record-keeping.
- Coordinate third-party inspections with testing firms.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
